Finn Focus at Rio2016: Brilliant Scott assured Finn gold with a race to spare
Giles Scott (GBR) has assured himself of gold after another brilliant performance that leaves him 24 points clear at the top after the fifth day of racing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition. Vasilij Zbogar (SLO) is second, 13 points ahead of Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO). Once again, Rio’s challenging conditions provided a mixed bag of results, with several sailors picking up high scores. There is now just the medal race to sail.
With just three races to sail at the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition, Giles Scott (GBR) has extended his lead to 17 points in the Finn fleet after a clinical performance on Saturday in Guanabara Bay. Vasilij Zbogar (SLO) stays in second while Jake Lilley (AUS) rises to third.
Today in Rio, Friday, the Finns have a day off; a day to recover and a day to reflect. It’s been a long three days and the results show a vastly different pattern to normal. Yes, the favourite Giles Scott (GBR) is where everyone expected him to be, but he knows as well as anyone that it is a precarious position when in Rio.
You had to see it to believe it. The third day of racing for Finns at the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition was a spectacular day of sailing with big winds, huge seas and even bigger stakes. While Giles Scott (GBR) moves into an 11-point lead and Vasilij Zbogar (SLO) hangs onto second, Zsombor Berecz (HUN), rockets up the fleet to third after a great performance.
