The great British weather arrived for day two of the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta in Weymouth with wind building from almost nothing in the morning to wet and very windy conditions in the afternoon leading to many classes being sent ashore after just one race, including the Finns.

Fresh from a race win on Monday, Andrew Mills (GBR) led round the top mark in race three from Giles Scott (GBR) and Ed Wright (GBR). With the wind picking up to 18-22 knots Scott took the lead on the second upwind ahead of Mills with Zach Railey (USA) climbing to third.

Mills took the lead on the final upwind to cross the line in first, but along with Scott was scored OCS. The winner turned out to be Brendan Casey (AUS) with Jonathan Lobert in second and Marin Misura (CRO) in third.

A fourth place finish for Pieter-Jan Postma moves him up to second overall, while a seventh for European Champion Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) leaves him in third overall on equal points. Zach Railey (USA) moves up to fourth place after finishing fifth in the race while Ben Ainslie (GBR) drops to sixth after placing 12th.

After one race the fleet was sent ashore in heavy seas, driving rain and winds around 25 knots. Once ashore racing was cancelled for the Finns.

Race winner Casey said, “There was a strong influence of current from left to right across the course and it was a race between Giles Scott, Andrew Mills and myself after the first downwind leg. Zach Railey was the biggest mover in the fleet until a capsize late on the final downwind.

Railey said, “I flipped on last downwind and lost three boats but given the flip I'll take a fifth!”

Racing continues to Friday and the medal race for the top 10 will be sailed on Saturday 14th August.
