The 2017 U23 Finn World Championship, for the Jorg Bruder Silver Cup, begins in just over a week at Balatonfured in Hungary. Last year’s winner, Phillip Kasüske reflects on his Finn campaign since then and his experience at the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.
Phillip Kasueske (GER) has won the U23 Finn World Championship for the Jorg Bruder Finn Silver Cup after a thrilling final day in Aarhus, which went right down to the final leg to decide the podium. Last year’s champion Ondrej Teply (CZE) almost did enough but had to settle for silver, while Facundo Olezza (ARG) wins the bronze, just before heading to Rio to prepare for the Olympics.
A dramatic fourth day at the U23 Finn World Championship in Aarhus, Denmark, has changed the landscape at the top of the leaderboard with just one day to sail. Defending champion Ondrej Teply (CZE) has now taken the lead for the first time, with Phillip Kasueske (GER) and Facundo Olezza (ARG) not far behind. Only three points separate the top three, with a break of 14 points to third, and just two races to sail.
Jan Orel (SLO) has a great story to tell. He is here this week in Aarhus competing in his first U23 Finn World Championship. While he is not that content with his performance so far he knows this is the start of a long journey, and for him a journey that got him back into sailing after an ‘unproductive’ period in his life out of the sport.
It was back to school time for the 35-strong U23 Finn World Championship fleet in Aarhus, Denmark today as Nenad Bugarin (CRO) taught them all a perfect lesson in tactics and fleet management in the shifty, puffy conditions of the third day. He won all three races by comfortable margins to take an 11-point lead at the top. Phillip Kasueske (GER) moves back to second after a consistent day while defending champion Ondra Teply (CZE) is now up to third.
If Finn sailors are looked upon as the giants of the sailing world, then Oisin Mcclelland (IRL) is a giant among Finn sailors. At his second and final Finn Silver Cup this week in Aarhus he is using the event as a marker to assess his progress since he first stepped into the Finn just over a year ago. His plan is then to step up his campaign to qualify Ireland for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and return to Aarhus in two years time for the first Olympic qualification event.
The Finn youth put on a spectacular show of physicality and very cool sailing on the second day at the U23 World Championship in Aarhus, Denmark, on Wednesday with three races in winds gusting 25 knots. After bronze and silver finishes in the last two years, Nenad Bugarin (CRO) has taken the overall lead at the half way stage. Max Kohlhoff (GER) enjoyed the power sailing day to remain in second, while Tuesday’s leader, Phillip Kasueske (GER) struggled in the breeze and dropped to third.
Over the past year André Højen Christiansen (DEN) has had the opportunity to learn from one of the best Finn sailors of all time. In 2015 he was invited to join the training group of double world champion and London 2012 silver medalist Jonas Høgh-Christensen (DEN) as he prepared for the Rio Olympics. Højen Christiansen jumped at the chance, knowing that opportunities like that don’t come along every day.
It may not have been the most glamorous day on the water on the first day at the 2016 U23 Finn World Championship in Aarhus, Denmark, but it was a solid day of great racing. Phillip Kasueske (GER) leads after three races from Max Kohlhoff (GER) and Lars Johan Brodtkorb (NOR), each taking a win in the three races.
Jock Calvert (AUS) has a dream. This week he is sailing at the U23 Finn World Championship for the Finn Silver Cup in Aarhus Denmark, but he is aiming much higher. After just six months in the class the 18 year old from Tasmania has set his sights on Tokyo 2020.
